Commitment to Diversity

Portage Public Schools and Kalamazoo County are fairly diverse. There are two high schools in PPS, Portage Northern and Portage Central and its fairly well known that there is a division in diversity between the two schools, Northern being more diverse. Something that has always been important to me about our publication is that every student at Northern sees themselves in our publication. We have a tremendous range of diversity and ensure we get as many voices as possible in our coverage. This can be seen in our print, web, and social media publications. As an editor we do make sure to interrogate that by asking things like who did you interview, how many people did you interview across different grades, religions, and races. As a person who plans to travel and study abroad in college this is especially important because we are such a small portion of the whole world and we need to do our best to open our horizons.
